Lehman Stages and Emerging Pictures are proud to present exclusive world class cultural programming with the Opera and Ballet in Cinema Series. This series offers an amazing schedule of incredible performances previously unseen in theatres. The Opera and Ballet in Cinema Series brings the best in dance and opera from around the world presented in crystal-clear Hi-Definition digital projection. Our spring season features amazing groundbreaking productions from The Bolshoi in Moscow, the Royal Opera House in London and the Gran Teatre Del Licieu in Barcelona among others.

Cendrillon (Cinderella)
Jules Massenet | Opera in four acts
From the Royal Opera House
Sung in French with English subtitles
Estimated running time: 170 minutes including one intermission
For the first time ever, The Royal Opera presents the story of Cinderella as told in Massenet’s opera Cendrillon. Joyce DiDonato stars in the virtuosic titular role, with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming. Dazzling runs and sparkling coloratura shimmer throughout the evening, with French music specialist Bertrand de Billy at the podium.

Il Trittico
IL TABARRO / SUOR ANGELICA / GIANNI SCHICCHI
Giacomo Puccini | Three one-act operas
From the Royal Opera House
Sung in Italian with English subtitles
Estimated running time: 225 minutes, including two intermissions
Puccini‟s Il Trittico, a gem-box collection of three brief operas, runs the gamut from heart-wrenching drama to madcap farce. The tragic Il Tabarro and Suor Angelica are followed by the charming Gianni Schicchi, best known for its resplendent soprano aria, “O bio babbino caro.” Lucio Gallo, Eva-Maria Westbroek, Anja Harteros, Anna Larsson and Ekaterina Siurina are featured throughout this very special evening from the Royal Opera House.

Le Corsaire
From the Bolshoi Ballet
Libretto by Jules Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Joseph Mazilier
Estimated running time: 215 minutes including 2 intermissions
In the Bolshoi Ballet’s new staging of Le Corsaire, Petipa’s original choreography is revived and refreshed by Alexei Ratmansky and Yuri Burlaka to breathe new life into this production. The ballet follows Medora, a young Greek girl, and Conrad, a dashing pirate, as they journey through a tapestry of dramatic events, culminating in a shipwreck considered to be one of ballet’s most dazzling spectacles.

La Bohème
Giacomo Puccini

Opera in Four Acts.

A warm coat, a glowing fire, a true friend, a lover’s kiss – La Boheme is the most romantic opera ever written. Puccini’s beloved melodies perfectly convey the heartbreak and passion of young, poor, Parisian artists falling in love. Let La Boheme break your heart for the hundredth time, or the very first time, in this intimate and moving production from the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona. Starring Fiorenza Cedolins as Mimi, Christopher Maltman as Marcello and Ramon Vargas as Rodolfo.

Romeo and Juliet

Choreography by Kenneth MacMillan Music by Sergey Prokofiev
With Romeo and Juliet, Kenneth MacMillan’s first full-length work for The Royal Ballet, both he and the Company struck artistic gold. The timeless story, best known from Shakespeare, matched to the fine score by Prokofiev provided the starting point for what has become a 20th-century ballet classic: an international calling card for the choreographer and a signature work of The Royal Ballet. Starring Lauren Cuthbertson and Sergei Polunin.

Rigoletto
Giuseppe Verdi

Running time: 129 minutes (approx)
A classic of opera, Verdi‘s famous score is loved for its melody and its drama. David McVicar‘s immensely popular production, in period costume, brings the 15th-century court of Mantua alive: its womanizing Duke, the court jester Rigoletto bent on revenge and his daughter, Gilda, who the Duke loves but still destroys. A celebrated score of familiar music conducted by John Eliot Gardiner, and a drama of the passions of love and hate.

The Bright Stream
From the Bolshoi Ballet
Music by Dmitry Shostakovich
Choreography by Alexei Ratmansky
A laugh-out-loud comical ballet in two acts, The Bright Stream celebrates the maddening, baffling disillusion of love with both hilarious deceptions and joyful resolutions. The libretto, by Adrian Piotrovsky and Fyodor Lopukhov, tells the story of the members of a Russian farm collective in the 1930′s and their humorous interactions with a group of visiting performers during the harvest festival. Known for his precise characterization in movement, Ratmansky uses Shostakovich’s robust folk music to tell this zany tale, broadcast from the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.

La Fille Mal Gardée
Choreography: Frederick Ashton
Ballet in 2 acts From the Royal Ballet
Music by Peter Ludwig Hertel, Riccardo Drigo, Louis Herold, Ferdinand Hérold, Cesare Pugni and Georges Bizet
Estimated running time: 118 minutes

Delightful comedy and virtuosic choreography abound in Frederick Ashton’s sunny and beloved production of La Fille Mal Gardée from the Royal Ballet. The simple story of Lise, her suitor Colas, and Lise’s larger-than-life mother who tries to marry her off to the simpleton son of a rich neighbor is both funny and touching, and filled with glorious detailed movement. La Fille Mal Gardée is perfect for ballet newcomers and irresistible to audiences of all ages.

Monday May 21 at 2PM in the Lovinger Theatre

Raymonda
Music by Alexander Galznov Choreographer: Yuri Grigorovich (version of 2003)
Running time: 155 minutes including 1 intermission

This three-act ballet featuring Glazunov’s glorious score tells the story of Raymonda, the niece of a French countess and betrothed to the knight Jean de Brienne. Separated by Jean’s commitment to aid King Andrei II in medieval times, another suitor is so dazzled by Raymonda’s beauty that he attempts to abduct her. Filled with color, grand effects, and a rousing duel, Raymonda features choreography by Yuri Grigorovich, broadcast from the Bolshoi Ballet, Moscow.
